Afghan relics to be displayed in France

AOP 11 August 2006 ( Makia Munir , KABUL, Aug 9 Pajhwok Afghan News): Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday approved sending of 225 historical items to exhibition that will start from 23rd November in Paris. Previously, the lower house was against sending these relics abroad, but in today session the members of parliament with 88 votes favoured sending the items to the exhibition. The exhibition will start on 23rd November and will end on 23rd March,Only 55 MPs voted against shifting the relics to the exhibition.

Moin Marastial, member of the culture affairs commission in Wolesi Jirga, said 10 countries including France, Netherlands and US had demanded display of these historical items. He said the relics were included crown, ornaments, paintings and statues belonging to second and fifth centuries before Christ.

French military aircrafts would carry the items, he added. France has taken insurance responsibility of the items that was over 100 million Euros, he said. According to the accord signed by France and Afghan Culture and Youth Affairs Ministry, the entire responsibility of safety of the items would be on France, he added.

The MPs who opposed sending the items abroad were worried about the theft of the materials. The supporters of dispatching the relics to expo argued let the people know about old history of the country.
